Traditional Tour – Ghana

DAY 1: Accra

Welcome to Ghana! … your journey to Africa begins when you are met at the airport by Sunseekers Tour staff and transferred to your hotel. Time to settle in, then a brief orientation before enjoying a Welcome Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

Day 2: Cape Coast

After breakfast you depart Accra for Cape Coast in the Central Region. The drive takes about three hours and follows the Atlantic Coast road, meandering through farms and villages with glimpses of fishing activity and coconut trees. Your destination is Cape Coast, once the capital of the old Gold Coast colony when it was under British rule.

On arrival you visit the Cape Coast Castle and the West African Historical Museum for a conducted tour. The slave Trade has left its mark on Ghana, where several forts and castles dating from the colonial era have been preserved as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Thousands of visitors gain insights into this sad chapter of history with visits to Ghana’s slave forts. Continue on for a comprehensive guided tour of Elmina Castle. Built by the Portuguese in 1482, this national monument is actually the first structure built by Europeans in sub-Saharan Africa.

On arrival at your beach front hotel the rest of the day is free for independent activities; relax by the hotel pool or spend explore the beach.

DAY 3: Kumasi

After breakfast, depart for the Ashanti Region, stopping en route to visit Kakum National Park, a pristine rainforest that features nature trails and an aerial walkway above the tree canopy. Enjoy an informative short hike along a trail where a ranger guide tells you about the plants and trees and their medicinal uses. The more adventurous may want to try the Aerial Walkway , which reaches a height of 120 feet, giving a panoramic view of the flora and fauna of the rainforest.

After a stop for lunch ( on your own account) you continue to Kumasi, passing through tropical forests and entering the region of Ghana’s vast gold reserves. The Ashanti Goldfields is one of the single richest gold mines in the world.

On arriving at your Kumasi hotel, the rest of the day is at leisure.

DAY 4: Kumasi

After breakfast go on a city tour of Kumasi, the regional capital of the Ashanti Region and home to the Ashanti King. Begin with a visit to the King’s residence, the Manhyia Palace and the Palace Museum. Next you visit on the National Cultural Centre and the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum. The Cultural Centre has many workshops where craftsmen create artworks in wood, ceramics and other materials, including the shop of a master drum maker.

Your next stop is the famous Okomfo Anokye Sword, a weapon that shares a mythology with Excalibur, the sword of King Arthur fame. From here you will tour the University of Science and Technology and visit the School of Art and Sculpture. Your tour finishes with a visit to Kumasi Central Market – the largest open-air market in West Africa.

Enjoy a lunch on your own and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

DAY 5: Accra

After breakfast leave Kumasi and set out on a tour of several of the region’s famous craft villages. Your first stop is Ahwiaa – the woodcarver’s village specialising in the carving of Ashanti stools, fertility dolls and walking sticks. From here go to Ntonso – the village where Adinkra cloth is made, along with the tie-and-dye process. Craftsmen will show you how the intricate designs are applied to this sacred cloth which is usually worn at funerals. Your third stop is Bonwire – famous for its Kente cloth, the cloth that is worn by royals and the King himself.

After a lunch stop (on your own account), the journey continues as you pass through large tracts of forest and traverse the heart of one of Ghana’s largest cocoa growing regions, before arriving back in your Accra hotel in the early evening. The rest of the evening is at leisure.

DAY 6: Accra

On your last day in Ghana, the time is free for independent activities, relax on the beach, go sightseeing in the city, or shop at one of the many markets. You can hire a taxi at your hotel and visit the sprawling Artist’s Market located on High Street a good place for last minute shopping.  Nearby is the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Independence Square with its noble arch, two of Accra’s most famous monuments.

In the evening you are treated to a Farewell Dinner before your airport transfer.
