Soaring Namibia

Namibia is the ultimate destination for any traveller looking for amazing landscapes, endless horizons and untouched nature. An itinerary designed as a first approach for travellers new to a flying safari, in order to show the potential and value of the experience, with an eye also to the budget. A valid alternative to ground tours in terms of costs, our flying safari adds the unique privileged aerial view, a must to fully enjoy the beauties of Namibia’s spectacular and varied sceneries. Guiding principle: great experience combined with very competitive costs. Even though accommodation standard is not luxurious, all lodges are of good level, comfortable and in excellent location. Namibia allows interesting encounters with the wildlife, however people seeking also the best wilderness safari experience should combine Namibia with Botswana, indeed the perfect match!

This flying safari operates throughout the year.

Flying Details During The Air-tour:

  • an average of 1.5 hours of flying time per day
  • aircraft used: Cessna Grand Caravan C208 (14 seats for max 9 pax + 1 pilot/guide for more comfort and all window seat). For small groups, in order to optimize costs, we can use our smaller Cessna 210 (6 seats for max 4 pax + pilot/guide for more comfort and all window seat)
  • Min. number of pax: 1
  • Max number of pax: 9 (all window seats) or 10 in case of a child in the group

DAYS 1 & 2: Windhoek / Etosha N.P.

Arrive in Windhoek (Namibia) and immediately meet your experienced pilot/guide at the airport, to review the itinerary and start the air-tour. The first flight will be at a medium height and will be over the Waterberg Plateau and the vastness of Namibia’s farmland. We land on the edge of the famous Etosha, the biggest national park in Namibia, and our “home” for the next two nights.

Activities: game drives in 4WD through unique habitats to encounter its wildlife – amongst them the famous big Etosha elephants, giraffes, zebras, a variety of antelopes and, with luck, also lions, cheetah and leopards.

  • Lunch own arrangements
  • Dinner at the camp
  • Overnight Mushara Bushcamp (all rooms en-suite)

DAY 3: from Etosha to Damaraland

Another morning game drive followed by lunch back at the lodge, and we are ready to proceed with our flying safari. Instead of routing directly to our next destination we set course northwest to reach one of the most remote and scenic areas of Namibia, the Kaokoland. We fly over some rugged mountains before reaching the coastline and the famous Skeleton Coast Park with its fascinating landscapes: long lines of barchan dunes chasing each other along the shoreline, the rough Atlantic Ocean breaking along the coast… We then proceed back inland, flying over mountainous terrain, to reach the unique Etendeka Mountains with their flat tops and mesas resembling the Colorado Plateau in the USA. After landing, a nice drive across the mountains offers incredible vistas and possible encounters with mountain zebras and springboks.

Activities: morning game drive in 4WD and afternoon nature drive in 4WD

  • Breakfast at the camp
  • Lunch at the camp
  • Dinner at the camp
  • Overnight Etendeka Mountain Camp, a simple permanent tented camp in an awe-inspiring location (all rooms en-suite with outside bathroom, flushing toilettes and bucket showers)

DAY 4: from Damaraland to Swakopmund

Early morning activity and after lunch back to the airstrip for another very scenic flight. One more look at the Etendeka Mountains from up above, then continuation over extensive volcanic plains with their really interesting shapes and natural patterns, sometimes carved out by winding seasonal rivers. Short stop to visit one of the biggest Steller Sea Lion colonies in the world – Cape Cross with its hundreds of thousands seals playing, fighting and sleeping in mass along the shoreline. Short flight to Swakopmund, a typical German seaside town on the Atlantic coast of Africa… quite surreal!

Activities: morning nature walk with a local ranger in the Etendeka Mts to enjoy the rugged beauty of landscape, meet some of its “inhabitants” and also learn about the fascinating geology of the place; afternoon visit to Cape Cross Seal colony

  • Breakfast at the camp
  • Lunch at the camp
  • Dinner own arrangements
  • Overnight Swakopmund Guesthouse *** (all rooms en-suite)

DAY 5: from Swakopmund to the Namib Desert

After breakfast transfer by private vehicle to the harbour in Walvis Bay to embark on a cruise which offers the opportunity to encounter playful dolphins, to perhaps experience a visit of one of the habituated seals jumping onboard to get some free food, to admire the numerous pelicans, seagulls and other numerous seabirds. If time allows free time for a stroll in Swakopmund and when the sun lowers a bit (for the best light!) departure for the most incredible flight possible in Namibia. We head south, along the coast, low level, to enjoy the great show of the Namib Desert dunes plunging directly into the ocean. From the air we can spot various seal colonies, as well the Edward Bholen shipwreck, before heading inland and cross the entire Namib Desert. The view from the air is incredible, an endless sea of sand dunes, forming the most fascinating patterns with their winding contours highlighted by the late afternoon lights. We are able to appreciate how the sand, as it moves inland, changes colour: from pale cream along the coast to intense red-orange on the eastern edge, where it is stopped by the Naukulft Mountains. After a final scenic flight over the famous high dunes of Sossousvlei, just before sunset, we land at the lodge airstrip.

Activities: morning sea-cruise in Walvis Bay Harbour and most amazing scenic flight over the coast and the desert

  • Breakfast at the Guesthouse
  • Snack light snack at the end of the cruise (with fresh oysters and sparkling wine)
  • Dinner at the lodge
  • Overnight Sossousvlei Lodge **** (all tented chalets en-suite)

DAY 6: from the Namib to Windhoek

After the morning excursion to the very famous Sossusvlei, in the afternoon departure by our private aircraft to fly back to the capital of Namibia where landing is expected late in the afternoon. Transfer to the guesthouse and free time.

Activities: morning excursion in 4WD to explore the famous dunes of Sossousvlei and the less famous but more picturesque Deadvlei where its dry white lake and the black silhouettes of dead acacias stand in sharp contrast with the surrounding orange high dunes. Fascinating diverse landscapes, interesting flora and fauna (gemsboks, mountain and Burchell’s zebras, springboks, bat-eared foxes etc.). Approx 120 km on tar road, along a dry river bed cutting its way thought high dunes, and 10 km of dirt sand track.

  • Dinner own arrangements
