Eco-Tourism Coastal – Ghana

DAY 1: Accra

Welcome to Ghana! … your journey to Africa begins when you are met at the airport by Sunseekers Tour staff and transferred to your hotel. Time to settle in, then a brief orientation before enjoying a Welcome Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

Day 2: Accra

After breakfast, depart on a city tour of Accra, first seeing the uniquely designed special caskets that reflect the beliefs of the local people at the Teshie and Nungua areas. Then proceed to the old city of Accra, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and the Arts and Crafts market where you may try your bargaining skills on local vendors and watch various craftsmen at work, carving drums, stools, masks or walking sticks. After lunch (on your own account), the day’s tour ends with a visit to the magnificent campus of the University of Ghana, where University bookshop will be open. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon with the res of the day at leisure, to relax by the pool or visit the beach. Dinner is on your own account with overnight in Accra.

DAY 3: Volta Region

After breakfast, depart for the Volta Region, driving past several rustic farming communities. Arriving in the town of Hohoe, continue to the Wli waterfalls, the highest waterfalls in Ghana and in West Africa. Put on your trekking shoes and enjoy a walk through a dense tropical forest, crossing the meandering Agumatse River at 11 small bridges before you arrive at the waterfall.

After a lunch break (on your own account) your last stop will be a visit to Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary where the endangered but playful Mona Monkeys are considered sacred and are therefore protected. Walk on well-cleared trails and view the monkeys in their natural habitat. You will also have an opportunity to hand feed them. Then continue on to Ho, the administrative capital of the Volta Region where you will check into your hotel with the rest of the day is at leisure.

DAY 4: Volta Region

After Breakfast, you depart to the southern Volta Region. En route, make a brief stop at Agotime-Kpetoe, the Kente weaving village and watch the craftsmen at work. You continue to the village of Xavi and the nearby Bird Watching Sanctuary. The terrain along the Lotor River is coastal savannah, fringing the wetland of the Avu Lagoon. A trained guide will take you by canoe on a river journey, where there is a great diversity of birds (over 90 different species) that can be seen, including the Pygmy Kingfisher and Senegal Parrot bird.

You continue your journey, headed for the Keta Lagoon where you will have lunch (on your own account). On the afternoon visit the Keta Lagoon and Sea Defense Wall project as you tour the township and vegetable cultivation sites located between the sea and the lagoon. This area has a unique but fragile eco-system that has been maintained over centuries.

Your overnight hotel is situated on the banks of the Volta River, and with the rest of the day at leisure,  you can independently engage in various water-based activities.

DAY 5: Western Region

After breakfast you depart for the Western Region, passing through Accra and travelling along the coastal road of the Central Region, reaching Dixcove in the early afternoon. Here you will visit the beautifully restored Fort Metal Cross for a guided tour.

Then continue on to your beachfront hotel at the nearby fishing village of Busua where you have the rest of the day to relax at one of the most pristine beaches in Ghana. You will have several choices for meals at either the hotel restaurant or one of the many other nearby eateries.

DAY 6: Western Region

After breakfast you depart for a full day of adventure. Your first challenge lies in the extreme western part of Ghana, beginning with a footpath through a marsh and then by hand-paddled canoe to Nzulezo, the village on stilts. This village is built entirely on the Amansure Lagoon. Here you will have a chance to interact with the villagers who live on this large lake. Explore their small village and see how people share their simple resources, with dependence on their environment.

Return to the mainland and continue on to the Ankasa Forest Reserve. Ankasa lies near the border of Cote d’Ivoire and is one of the richest eco-systems in Ghana, blessed with an abundance of biodiversity. Take a walking tour of the pristine tropical rainforest and its lush vegetation. Learn about the many uses of the plants and discover a plant that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Here you also visit the Bamboo Cathedral where you can relax in the serene bamboo groove. The night is spent at a rustic camp where amenities are basic. Engage in eco-sensitive training activities under the guidance of trained environmentalists. Dinner (on your own account) is at the campsite.

DAY 7: Central Region

Enjoy a breakfast in the forest and take time to learn more about tropical rain forest environments.  A mid-morning departure for the journey to the Central Region, passing through plantations of date palms and rubber trees as you reach the coast and the town of Elmina. Here is where Europeans first made contact with the people who lived in Ghana before it became known as the Gold Coast. After lunch at  your hotel (on your own account), spend part of the afternoon touring the ancient township and the vibrant fishing harbour. The rest of the day is free for independent activities.

DAY 8: Central Region

After breakfast, depart for a visit to Kakum National Park, one of Ghana’s showpiece parks that is home to one of the last remaining original growth rain forests in West Africa. Walk along the ‘Kuntan Trail’ with its many trees, where a park ranger will explain how the local people use the vegetation for their medicinal properties. The more adventurous can experience the “Canopy Walk”, suspended 100 feet from the ground, for a panoramic view of the flora and fauna in one of the last remaining vestiges of the rain forest.

After a midday lunch break (on your own account) you journey continues to Elmina Castle for a guided tour of this ancient edifice, built in 1482 by the Portuguese – the first and oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa. Originally a garrison to facilitate trade with the local people it later became one of Ghana’s most notorious prisons where captive slaves were kept, pending their shipment to overseas colonies in the Americas.

Return to the hotel in the late afternoon with the rest of the day free for independent activities.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with the morning free to realx at the beach or by the pool. In the early afternoon depart for the three hour drive back to Accra, stopping en route to visit a typical fishing village and observe how gari, a local cassava-based staple food is prepared, and learn how fish are smoked and preserved.

Arrrive at your hotel in Accra in late afternoon. Tonight you will have a dinner at a Ghanaian home with traditional entertainment.

DAY 10: Depart

The morning is at leisure with breakfast at the hotel. Check out of the hotel before noon and put your bags in storage. Your whole day is free to pursue whatever activities you choose to do. Spend the day at the popular La Beach where you will see roving musicians, acrobat troupes and vendors selling Ghanaian crafts – or pay a visit to the National Arts Centre for last minute shopping. Lunch is on your own, but this evening enjoy a Farewell Dinner before your airport transfer.
